Located on the eastern tip of O’ahu, the Makapu’u Lighthouse trail is a 3 mile round trip ride on paved road.
No matter which way you drive to Makapu'u trail get ready for some beautiful scenery. The resulting view from the 1.5 mile ride is equally rewarding.
The trail itself is not at all technical but the grade is pretty steep. You can take it easy or really push yourself for a good leg burning. Take is slow on the downhill, there are a lot of hikers on this trail. I usually arrive early in the morning before all the tourists start to show up.
There is a dedicated parking lot for the lighthouse trail so you will not have to park on the road. If you get there early enough parking won't be a problem. By the time you leave it will most likely be packed. At least on the weekends.
There isn't much shade so bring plenty of water. I have never noticed any other amenities.
If you want to keep on riding be sure to check out the neighboring Ka'iwi State Scenic Shoreline trail system. You can access it from the same parking lot and ride all the way to Sandy Beach along the beautiful coast line.
