The part of this trail from Maras to the Urubamba river used to be one of my favorites, flowy and fast on top with some nice rock gardens after the salt mines. The rock gardens have in recent years smoothed out, so you can go much faster through the bottom section. My problem is with the Salinas archeological site (salt mines), you are now expected to pay 10 soles to pass through.. I tried to explain to the gate keepers that I was just using the trail for riding and had no intentions of stopping to visit the mines (that used to work) but they refused and made me pay. I protested pointing out that if I wanted to visit the site, as I do when I ride Pumamarca, I’d be happy to pay but since I was only passing through and riding the trail I felt this was extortion.. the locals here are dicks and want money. Avoid this trail. Pity as it’s still somewhat fun to ride but f*ck their extortion
