If you have ever wanted a warm up lap for POA/Bluffs, then Lakes is your huckleberry. Trail entrance is directly across Jenkins Road from the trailhead kiosk. Look for the carbonite post, head to the right through the bar-ditch. Be mindful of the sprinklers watering in the native grasses; don't ride this portion of trail when it's wet. Stick to the road. Follow the purple painted rocks until the hard left into the trees along the creek. Traverse the rock path behind the fence and you're golden for the trail ahead.
Trail is well-marked and easy to follow. After the field spin, enjoy a gradual climb up the bluff through the trees. It's twisty, with a couple of minor climbs. The trail will drop out of the trees to a barren moonscape. Enjoy the rock drop and the berms. As you cross the road, be mindful of traffic. Cross the road--seriously, look both ways--and wind your way up and around the large rocks in the mulch field. You've made it when you spot the Roman aqueduct on your left. Follow the trail into the trees. After a second moonscape area, rejoin the POA loop just past the mulch field. Once you reach the bench overlooking the Lakes, you have the option to loop into POA or bomb down the hill and head for the Bluffs. Either way, you're ready after the sweet warm up.
Disclaimer
When the portion along Jenkins road is wet from watering, stick to the road. You can join the trail just before the road bridge.
