Rata ridge is a trail along the ridge between Mt Lowry and Wainuiomata. The origin of the track is as a walking track - lots and lots of roots, fallen trees, steps, steep rutted sections, drops, that sort of stuff, but almost all of it is rideable (advanced riders). It is still popular with walkers.
To access the track, climb the Mt Lowry track from the top of the Wainui Hill. There are a few parts towards the middle/top where you will need to walk/carry your bike up.
Once at the summit of Mt Lowry the trail begins and you'll have wonderful natural downhill trail through Beech and Rata trees. Eventually you will exit on to a fire break. This part of the trail can be slippery so watch your speed if it's you're first time.
Not all of the tracks in the area are for mountain bikes, so please respect the rules. Non-biking tracks are well signposted.
Access to the trail is from the summit of Wainuiomata Hill road. At the Lower Hutt side of the Pukeatapu Bridge, head up the path. The tracks are well signposted.
