This description is for Upper and Lower Redtop. The trail to the top of Red Mountain is one of our finest and most popular trails. Built in the summer of 2008, with the support of Red Mountain Resorts, Redtop involves a strenuous climb to the summit of Rossland's iconic peak, followed by an exhilarating ride back down. The route is perfect for x-country enthusiasts or all mountain riders providing stunning views and captivating riding. The trail is almost entirely, purpose-built, singletrack, beginning in thick forest and gradually opening into more alpine terrain. Views of Rossland and the Columbia Valley are more revealed as height is gained.

Redtop trail begins on the Old Red Mtn Rd (400 m before Red Resort base). Another trailhead exists on the grassy slopes beside Red's ticket office but both trails join together in a short distance. The climb is efficient and enjoyable, consistently steep but never too severe, with many switchbacks to navigate the tough terrain. The Redhead trail is crossed on the lower section, then intersects with the end of Miners trail. This marks the split between Upper and Lower Redtop. Proceed up a short section of road (Dales Trail) which turns quickly back into sweet singletrack for the remainder of the journey. The upper section is characterized by side-hill traverses to rock-walled switchbacks at each end, as it zig-zags up onto more open slopes. Pass Poochys Cabin near the top and push on a little further to reach to the summit. Take a breath, admire the views, drop your seat and pedal down into the fast and flowy trail you just climbed.

Hints: Redtop is a dream ride when you have it uninterrupted. Peak periods, such as Saturday morning can cause minor conflict on the trail, with hikers and riders all striving for the same piece of trail. Avoid busy times if possible.

A great test for many riders is to clean Redtop from top to bottom. There are several challenges on the ascent, most requiring good bike handling skills and strong legs. Conserve your energy between switchbacks where the grade eases and allows a short moment of respite.
