County of San Diego Parks and Recreation

On the Ridge Trail, you are rewarded with magnificent valley-to-mountain views, lots of bright yellow mountain violets sway in the breezy meadow. From this vantage point, you can also see Lake Sutherland to the northwest. The Engelmann Oak is the dominant tree in the West preserve, according to a county report on its flora and fauna. There are also plentiful coast live oaks here, the most common large tree in San Diego County.Other things you should know: right now, its summertime, which means it’s warm. Be sure to bring plenty of water, as it can get warm, and the oaks don’t provide that much shade. Also, the trail from Santa Ysabel Creek to the Ridge Trail/High Creek Trail is somewhat steep, so be ready for a short but steep ascent.

Access Info

Take Highway 78 to Santa Ysabel. Staging Area is one mile west of Santa Ysabel on Highway 78 at call box #495 or across the street from 29313 Hwy 78.

Lots of hills, easy creek crossing. A few steep good climbs. Rocky but not too technical. Cattle around, mind your business, they’ll mind...
