From the intersection with the Winsor Trail just below the Ski Santa Fe base Rio en Medio begins descending very steeply on loose rock; luckily this extremely technical section is brief but it sets the tone. Rio en Medio is a long, backcountry adventure, and has significant double black level sections along its length, though many sections of the trail are scenic and flowing as it follows its namesake body of water. However, the sections that are immensely technical, steep, and rough define the experience here. Also, given the remote nature of the trail as well as its length, Rio en Medio takes commitment, and there are multiple unmarked intersections that are easy to miss. In general take a map, and even wiser, take someone who knows the trail. The trail ends at the small village of En Medio, but there are earlier bailout options that, again, are easy to miss unless you are riding with someone who knows the area.
