Rock Canyon has its name for a reason. Where there isn't loose gravel, count on there being lots of rocks to make things interesting. Be prepared for a constant, intense climb. The trail starts out wide and rather bland, but does taper and become a little more exciting after a while. Rocks and gravel make for decent wet weather conditions; sticky mud is absent.

Downhill this really isn't all that bad. A lot of loose rock and big shale sections make for very difficult climbing, but it is not very steep, so not difficult to keep things under control going down. Multiple bridge crossings, and creek crossings as you get higher to the top.

Check your speed at the bottom gate, cause, there is a gate. And there are typically people rock climbing the cliff right by the gate, and groups tend to congregate.

       This is a very very technical ride up, simply because the trail is entirely loose rocks. Sliding a tire off the side of a rock or having rocks slide out from under your back tire are very common. The way down is fun, but again, very technical. Too much brake and your front tire starts to dig in.

       Agreed. Double black makes no sense. Maybe a blue for descending and a black for ascending.

       Went all the way to the campground and had to descend in the dark without a light since it gets dark quickly in the wooded canyon as soon as the sun gets low. Also, on the way back, maybe 3/4 mile below the campground, my friend and I spooked a big, dark, round shape that made a bearlike huff and crunched the brush beneath it. Naturally, we decided to keep riding to put some distance between us and the bear. We made it back safe but my thighs were burning at the bottom. Crazy ride.

       This was a lot harder than I thought it would be. So much loose gravel and larger rocks. It makes for a seriously tough climb. I had to get off about half way and hike-a-bike until the last .5 mile. Coming down was a blast though. Almost ate $@#$ off a drop. But this was a great ride overall. I would probably shuttle this next time. The down hill was NOT worth the up hill climb on this one. And I love climbing.
