This is reported to be Alaska's first road. The area where Quebecois Joe Juneau and Irishman Richard Harris were guided to gold by Chief Kowee. Over time the roadbed has been adapted to slides and re-routing with short more difficult travel. Mountain goats and black bear are common as are locals and visitors on the trail. Heavy hardrock surface and subsurface mining has altered the landsape. EPA superfund site at the end of the trail-Don't eat the berries.
