The Sheep Creek trail, formerly known as 'Dewdney Backside' is an all-mountain style singletrack that drops west, from the Cascade Summit into the remote, Big Sheep Creek Valley. The trail is narrower, rougher and less featured than the east side Dewdney trail, however, Sheep Creek is more aesthetic, a little more challenging and just as fast and thrilling. It contains mostly intermediate riding down old singletrack, broken by several steep, loose logging roads. Lower into the valley the trail encounters a couple of tight corners and some rock challenges, including a final boulder field before it ends onto Big Sheep Creek Rd.

The KCTS began managing and maintaining the Sheep Creek trail in the summer of 2009, as requests for more downhill trails became apparent. This 5 km section of the historic Dewdney trail, which was original built in 1865 as a pack route to the goldfields in the East Kootenay, had seen little maintenance in 150 years and was in need of care. The corridor now sees annual clearing, with tread work being performed regularly. The trail sees more use now than ever before and for riders has become an excellent downhill ride through forested slopes in a spectacular setting.

Hints: The first 1 km of trail follows a slight bench above the Old Rossland Cascade Hwy and then crosses the road for the first and only time. Look slightly uphill to a post and trail which can be hidden by the bank. Likewise, further down the trail, try to observe where the trail leaves the logging road, which are all signposted.

are people still riding the backside these days? I host a trail riding weekend in christina lake each year and was wondering if this was still rideable.

Still rideable. People shuttle it every now and then. It's not maintained regularly though.
