This is marked on most maps with two (and sometimes three) trail names, but since there are no other options at the "intersections", it's best to think of these trails as one loop. The preferred direction is to start at the eastern, Sheller's Shanty end and descend a fairly long and steep drop into the valley. The trail doesn't get a lot of use, so be on the look out for fresh blowdowns. After over a half mile of descending, start looking for a hard right onto an overgrown old haul road. Follow this until you come to a rotting bridge over a creek. Do not cross the bridge, but rather follow the red blazes to the right and start the climb out of the valley.
After you eventually cross the creek, start looking for a blue blazed trail on the right. This is an older trail that will soon be the designated route as the current red blazed trail goes straight up the hillside and is impossible to ride.
