This section of the Silver Moccasin Trail connects CA-2 at Shortcut Saddle with Rincon Red Box Fire Road at West Fork CG. Descend several short switchbacks to Shortcut Fire Road, and go right (west) about 0.3km to where the trail goes left and drops off the road. The going is moderate to very steep at times, especially in the upper switchbacks. There are a few very spicy outside corners in this section. Once down on the canyon bottom, the trail crosses the creek repeatedly and with difficulty.

At Shortcut Saddle, the trail intersects with Silver Moccasin (Alder Creek to Shortcut Saddle) and with Shortcut Fire Road. At West Fork CG, the trail intersects with Rincon Red Box Fire Road, Gabrielino Trail (Kenyon-Devore Trail to West Fork CG), and Gabrielino Trail (West Fork CG to Newcomb Pass).
