This section of Silver Moccasin Trail connects the lower end of the Chilao Loop Road at Coulter CG entrance to the Charlton Loop Road (N) at the bottom of Charlton picnic area. A short climb from the Chilao trailhead leads to a long descent over large steps, through desert scrub, into the East Fork of Alder Creek. At the bottom of the canyon, the trail meets an old road, and continues south to Charlton picnic area. The climbing is mostly easy to moderate, with one very steep paved section past a Yosemite-scale boulder in a picturesque canyon.

Major tree falls, debris, on trail through Charlton Flats. Has not been cleared since the winter of 2019 storms. Could not get to last DH section to Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Rd, but was my first time. I realize now I could have probably ridden on park roads and found it if I knew where to look. Instead, I bailed out to 22 and road Red Box to Gabrelino Trail. I had a long way to go, so didn't spend time messing around hike-a-biking over large fallend trees.
