This is a HIKING TRAIL ONLY. Not suitable for bikes.

A moderate hike to the crest of Spineback Ridge, with stunning views down onto Island Lake.

The trail starts through the marshland habitat of the valley floor, but soon begins to climb through mature forest. As it heads into the alpine, paralleling the beautiful Spineback Ridge, the trail winds up through sub-alpine meadows, reaching the crest of the ridge and its bench. Continue another 0.5 km up to a second bench nestled between the 3 Bears’ peaks.

Island Lake Lodge is a worthy destination. A word- class lodge sitting above an alpine lake with majestic views up to the Three Bears mountain peaks. In the summer months you can sit on a stunning deck surrounded by flowers and enjoy gourmet lunch options and a cold beer.

Access Info

Drive out of Fernie heading South (Cranbrook direction) for 3km to Mt Fernie Provincial Park. Turn right in to the park and head up the Island Lake Road for 9km from the highway, following signs to Island Lake Lodge. Park at the Lodge and you can go in and ask for a trail map.

From the Lodge head onto the Lake Trail and Fir Trail toward the west end of Island Lake. Once you reach the marked junction, follow the Spineback signs.

Just a heads up about bringing your dogs on this trail. Brought our two dogs and the pads on their paws were all chewed up from the sharp rock a bit further up the mountain. Some of the rock is coral like and very sharp.

The rest of the trail is no problem for the most part.
