An out and back down to the confluence of the Sulphur and Smoky Rivers, aka The Gates. This is part of the CDR Leg 5.The trail is double track with some steep loose rocky and root sections with minor drops. The trail ends on a gravel bar giving unique views of the Sulfur Gates cliffs. This is the location of the old forestry boat house that burned down in 1978.

Access Info

To get on the trail take the southeast fork heading downhill from the top of Bucksaw Ridge where it joins with the Hilltop connector. This will give you a taste of what is in store on the final pitch before the river. On the return trip use the right hand fork in the trail to take you back to the top of the Great Escape.
