Thorn has continued to improve in 2017 and 2018 should see another great season. Part of the issue with the trail is it usually dries very slowly after winter. Spring riding is usually a muddy outing on the Thorn. It’s better in late Spring and Summer/Fall. It’s one of the areas LAST trails in the area to dry out.
The old bi-directional option has been removed and the trail is now running clockwise. There are various entry points but it’s “official” start point is from the farthest north lot. It’s marked very well.
The opening section gives you a fairly flat start with some brief downhill sections. You’ll be introduced to roots that you’ll find throughout the trail. The climbs are mainly short, punchy climbs with a few technical turns. The middle section gives you a generous amount of flat runs through some sweeping turns. The end will give you a few more climbs as you work your way back through some tight singletrack.
What will keep you on your toes at the Thorn is the roots and rocks. They are abundant and in nearly every section. It’s not a difficult trail but there are some sections that could challenge a casual rider. If you’re experienced you can run this trail with a lot of speed. Use caution as there are hikers and campers.
Thorn is one of my favorite trails and I’m very happy to see other riders are starting to see why it’s so fun!
Furthest parking lot on the northwest side of the park. You’ll see big mountain bike banners.
