Gatineau Park Trail #1 is multi use trail/ maintenance access road for most of it's length. Several of the parks cabins are accessible from the trail (Keogan, Shilly Shally, Huron, Western and McKinstry) as well as the very popular Champlain Lookout.

The #1 trail starts with a very steep climb near Old Chelsea and then turns into a moderate "blue square" trail with lots of hill climbing and descending until the end at the Luskville Fire Tower.

Be aware that some of the hills occasionally sustain water damage and can have deep ruts running through them (the Kingsmere climb in particular). As well there are long stretches of the trail with a gravel top layer that reduces traction.

Please be courteous to the other trail users as you can get going very fast on some of the down hills. This is a popular hiking trail for the entire length due to the many connecting hiking trails.

Access Info

If you are starting from Old Chelsea you can park in the Chelsea parking/picnic area next to L'Orée du Boris restaurant on Notch Rd and at the Gatineau Park Visitors Center on Scott Street. You can find the Gatineau Park map on the links on this page.

The trail needs a warning on the left-hander past the hut - the exposed bedrock is quite hazardous. Otherwise, there are three fallen trees...

Great trail to get you around in the Gatineau park and connect with other trail to make different loop.

This is my go to trail if I need to warm up my legs and just pedal on nice easy terrain but the climbs are definitely lung busters and make your legs feel a bit heavy after. Best way to ride this trail is to start at Keogan and then head towards Champlain and the double back on the 1 all the way to chemin Old Chelsea.
