This trail begins with rocky technical switchbacks from SR-89, but after that this trail is moderately difficult with rocky sweeping turns through remote forest and the aptly named Big Meadow. After 3 miles Round Lake is a sublime alpine lake and should be savored. Beyond the lake the trail climbs through conglomerate rock features--rare in the Tahoe area. The trail quality briefly degrades because of loose rounded stones but then levels out into a gentle climb to the Pacific Crest Trail. Unfortunately bikes are prohibited on the PCT, but take a moment to hike out to the historic Meiss cabin 500 ft directly west.
This trail has stunning views and is very popular hikers and equestrians. Please be overtly courteous.
This ride is not so much enduro ride as it is xc. There are no fun features to play on although there are some 1 ft rock drops. The trail can be done as out and back or with options to Chirstmas Valley, Hawley Grade, and Mr. Toads.
Use the Big Meadow Trailhead parking lot off SR-89 and ride south. The Christmas Valley Trail intersects this trail 0.7 miles shy of Round Lake.
