Very similar to Tunnel 6, or The Shire. Roots stick out of the ground, and there is and abundance of tree cover. Some rollers can be found on the west side. Pretty tight trail and slightly overgrown sometimes.

Yes, gut wrencher is an official park trail and fire road. Links McGonigle Canyon to Deer Canyon. I think SDG&E uses it as an access road.

It's the steep horse-shoe section at the north end of this trail:

Gut wrencher is a strava segment name. Some people also call it "chain breaker." On Trailforks, it is the north part of the "Tunnels Road" trail:

Who's joke was it putting this as a bi-directional access trail? This is about as steep a hill as I've ever been down!

I was originally going to put it as a black, but forgot to.

I'd put it at double black personally, just in relation to the black trails in the area. Hell, "the Sh!ts" is black and that's easy as hell.

I made it through alright (with more practice I'm sure it's super fun), I just wasn't expecting it when the trail dropped off the side of the hill. I stopped and double checked I was in the right place on my phone, then shrugged and dropped in Smile

if it is steep, is it loose? those things just aren't the combination I want.

The steep trail referenced above is probably Rollercoaster, which branches off from Tunnel 7. Tunnel 7 itself is quite mellow and short, but fun nonetheless.

Note that there is an abandoned fridge on the side of the trail. Unfortunately, it isn't well-stocked so skip the idea of a lunch stop.
