The Virginia Gulch Trail is a steep non-motorized pack trail that goes from the Stormy Peak Lookout area down into Virginia Gulch and Pine Creek. This is a downhill trail for the expert mountain biker. The trail drops from the upper trail head at 7,850 feet down to the Pine Creek Road at 4,600 feet. A drop of 3,250 feet in 3.5 miles. The trail is narrow single track on steep side slopes in some areas. The trail goes through Douglas- fir and ponderosa pine forests and grassy areas. There will be some brush along the trail in the lower areas. You can continue down the Pine Creek road to the Salmon River then upriver to the Shoup store. Have a milkshake at the Shoup Store, you have earned it after this ride!
The upper trail head junctions with the Haystack-Stormy Peak Trail 176 approximately one quarter mile east of the Stormy Peak Lookout. The junction is not signed or well marked. The bottom trailhead is on a switchback on the Pine Creek road and is not marked or signed. To get to the upper trailhead you will need to ride approximately 8 miles of the Haystack-Stormy Peak Trail 176. A shuttle is realistically necessary for this ride.
