This is an old forestry trail. Follow the track up through regenerating pine forest to a clearing with a sharp left turn an start of a steep climb. Continue up this track, passed the plateau and up into slightly overgrown track. The track will then turn into regrowing grass covered trail with a gentle roll down to another short climb. Continue following the main track now starting to descend back into the pine forest. About 200mtrs down this trail there is a just visible track to your right leading into thicker bush. Follow this track through the overgrowing track. Several hundred metres into this track take the first sharp left turn. This takes you down a moderately rutted overgrown and slightly challenging descent. Continue following this track. It will eventually open out to an old forestry road with an amazing view of the Waiohine Gorge and the Tararua Ranges. Follow the road down to the main Waiohine Gorge Road turn left at the main road and ride back to the DOC shelter.

Access Info

Access is via Waiohine Gorge Road. Park at the DOC shelter. From the shelter the track entrance is about 250mtrs further along the road and to your right. Old wooden signpost frame at the entrance (no actual sign)

Take the second turn off from the main road. Its just at the top of a short rise then right to an open 4x4 track.

Bring your machete. 2nd April 2018 it was extremely overgrown. Lots of deep ruts caused by 4WD. Steep, technical ups and downs.

Missed the final right turn and rejoined the original trail via a steep, heavily rutted trail.
