Description
The Western Okataina Walkway is an old forestry road that dates back to earlier last century when the area was logged for rimu, totara, rata and kahikatea. It is generally wide and well formed.

Pass through some stunning native bush. Absorb amazing views of Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti from the Whakapounakau Trig.

Getting there
The track has three entry points - the Okataina Education Camp and Waipungapunga carpark (both on Okataina Road) and off Millar Road, Lake Okareka.

Mountain biking
The Western Okataina Walkway is a challenging mountain bike ride.

It can be ridden in both directions but if you start from Millar Road, you'll experience an exhilarating downhill from Whakapoungakau Trig all the way to the Outdoor Education Centre.

Know before you go
There is comprehensive signage at all entry points explaining trail conditions as well as maps showing each particular area.

Track very rutted from rain leading in and out of streams. I’d say about 10% unrideable. Apart from that just beautiful. Not for the novice.
