This loop incorporates the beginner, intermediate, and technical sections of Westwood Park Trail System. When you enter the park turn left to the upper parking lot. The trailhead is at the end of the parking lot on the left. A trail map is located at the trailhead. When facing the trailhead, enter to the left to begin. The trail to the right is the exit. There are 5 splits in the ride. Signs are posted at the splits. At the first two splits, follow the yellow (intermediate) trail connectors. At the next three splits, follow the red (technical) trail. There are several bypass options to eliminate steep climbs, and descents. However, the bypasses are rarely ridden, and maintained, so are usually overgrown.

The first section of the trail mostly follows the beginner loop. This is a really nice up and down section with a few sustained downhills. Around mile 1.5 the trail splits. Follow the red Arrow. At this point, the trail becomes noticeably more technical. The toughest sections are located in this segment. At mile 2 and 3.5 are two really fun swooping downhills, not terribly technical, but some steep sections. At mile 2.7,3.7, and 4.1, are three of the toughest climbs on the trail, Switchback Hill, and Widowmaker Climb. Swithback Hill has two tight, steep switchbacks. Widowmaker is very step with large, slippery roots. A creek crossing is located at mile 4.3. The trail, after crossing the creek, is the newest section. There are still a few areas being "ridden in." This segment will end with a tough rock garden around mile 5.4. After this section, pedal to the left on the paved road around the pond. Follow the road up the hill. At about mile 5.8 the trail enters the woods to the left, and becomes singletrack again. Follow this back around to the trailhead.

I stayed a 2 minute drive from the park at Mayberry Motor Lodge all weekend and wound up driving 30 minutes to a place called Fisher River Park and rode that trail.

Could have saved drive time and just pedaled out the hotel door to this. Hah!
