Overview
Fredericksburg Trails Alliance (FTA), also known as FredTrails, is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and expanding bicycle and pedestrian access to off-road trails in the greater Fredericksburg, Virginia region. The organization works through trail advocacy, education, communication, recreation, and hands-on trail construction and maintenance, with an emphasis on creating sustainable trails that serve a broad range of users and abilities.

FTA plays an important role in the development and stewardship of the Fredericksburg area's growing trail network, working with public agencies, landowners, trail users, and community organizations to improve existing trails, develop new opportunities, and promote responsible trail use. Its work encompasses mountain biking, hiking, trail running, and other forms of non-motorized recreation.

Trails & Facilities

Fredericksburg Trails Alliance is closely involved with several of the area's principal off-road trail systems, including the extensive network at Motts Run Reservoir and the Fredericksburg Quarry. Motts Run Reservoir Recreation Area encompasses approximately 860 acres and includes a growing network of multi-use, bike-only, and hiking trails ranging from beginner-friendly terrain to more challenging routes. FTA has been involved in new trail construction, bridge projects, creek-crossing improvements, signage, and ongoing maintenance within the system.

The Fredericksburg Quarry trail system provides a contrasting environment, with a network of singletrack and multi-use trails incorporating rolling terrain, roots, rocks, stream crossings, technical features, and views toward the Rappahannock River. Trails such as Ridgeline, Beach Trail, Gratitude, and Olde Towne are among the trails on Trailforks associated with Fredericksburg Trails Alliance.

FTA's work extends beyond construction. Volunteers have installed trail posts and signs at important junctions, repaired bridges and creek crossings, cleared storm damage, and undertaken improvements intended to make the trail systems safer, easier to navigate, and more sustainable.

Stewardship & Community
A central part of FTA's mission is responsible trail stewardship. The organization promotes sustainable trail practices, works to minimize erosion and environmental impacts, and encourages users to avoid damaging trails during wet and otherwise vulnerable conditions. Its trail-status system uses Green, Amber, Red, and Blue conditions to communicate when trails are suitable for use and when users should exercise caution or stay off the trails to prevent damage.

FTA is a volunteer-driven organization, with community members contributing to trail construction, maintenance, signage, events, education, and advocacy. The organization also supports group rides, hikes, skills activities, children's programs, and other social events intended to introduce people to the area's trails and build a stronger outdoor recreation community.

The Alliance works collaboratively with municipalities, landowners, land managers, other trail organizations, and community groups. Its stated objectives include incorporating historical, cultural, and environmental considerations into trail planning and working with land managers to balance recreation, conservation, safety, and sustainable access.

Vision
Fredericksburg Trails Alliance's long-term goal is a connected, sustainable, and accessible network of off-road trails serving the greater Fredericksburg community. By combining advocacy, volunteer stewardship, trail development, education, and community engagement, FTA seeks to expand opportunities for people to experience the region's natural areas while protecting the resources on which those experiences depend.

The organization's work at Motts Run, the Quarry, and other local trail areas is part of a broader effort to make trails an integral component of Fredericksburg's outdoor recreation infrastructure and community life.
