Washoe County Trails Program
Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space
Legal/Registered Name
Washoe County Trails Program
Mission/Purpose
The Washoe County Trails Program plans, develops, coordinates and oversees the County's trail system, maintaining existing trails, developing new trail connections and supporting a connected regional network of trails and open space throughout northern Nevada.
Organization
The Washoe County Trails Program operates within Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space, which is part of the Washoe County Community Services Department. Regional Parks and Open Space manages approximately 12,000 acres, including more than 10,000 acres of open space and 49 parks, with a diverse network of trails and recreational facilities.
The Trails Program is represented by the County's Trails Program Coordinator, Christina Thayer, who serves as the County's primary contact for questions concerning Washoe County-managed trails.
Direct Responsibilities
The Trails Program has direct responsibility for planning, developing and maintaining trails under Washoe County's jurisdiction. Its responsibilities include trail planning and design, construction and improvements, maintenance, trail mapping and information, trailheads and associated infrastructure, signage and wayfinding, and addressing unauthorized or unsustainable trails where appropriate.
The County also undertakes trail projects and maintenance in cooperation with other land managers where formal agreements or partnerships establish County responsibilities. The Program therefore has both direct operational responsibilities and a broader role in coordinating trail development and stewardship across the region.
Regional Coordination
A central function of the Trails Program is coordination among the agencies and organizations responsible for the region's interconnected trail network. The Program works with federal and state land managers, including the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management, Nevada State Parks, the cities of Reno and Sparks, nonprofit trail organizations, community groups and other stakeholders.
This coordination is particularly important where trails cross jurisdictional boundaries or where a proposed trail, reroute, closure or maintenance issue affects more than one land manager. The County's Park Planning and Development program specifically describes its role as coordinating with partner organizations, agencies and stakeholder groups to develop a regional network of parks, trails and open space.
The Trails Program also provides an important point of coordination with nonprofit trail organizations and community partners. This helps align trail development, stewardship, maintenance and public information while ensuring that the responsibilities and decisions of the actual land manager remain clearly understood.
Social and Unauthorized Trails
The Program's coordination role is particularly important in dealing with social and unauthorized trails. Decisions about whether such routes should be retained, formalized, rerouted or decommissioned need to be coordinated with the land manager and, where appropriate, trail organizations and other stakeholders. This allows the trail inventory to accurately distinguish between established trails and routes that are not authorized or intended for public promotion.
Role on Trailforks
The Washoe County Trails Program's participation in Trailforks provides the County with a direct mechanism for helping ensure that information concerning County-managed trails, access, closures, projects and trail status is accurately represented.
Working alongside the existing regional Trailforks administration and regional trail organizations, the County can provide authoritative land-management information while the broader Trailforks community contributes local trail knowledge and updates. This creates a more accurate and useful trail inventory for land managers, trail organizations and the public.

Website
Washoe County Trails: The County maintains a dedicated Trails section with trail information, a trail directory, maps, rules and etiquette, resources and contact information.
Social Media
The Trails Program does not appear to maintain a separate Trails-specific social-media presence. Washoe County Parks uses the County's broader Parks social-media channels for public communications. The County itself directs residents to the Washoe County Parks Facebook page for park updates.
Logo
There does not appear to be a separate official logo for the Trails Program. For a Trailforks Directory Profile, the appropriate branding would therefore be the official Washoe County logo/seal, subject to the County's permission and branding requirements. Washoe County specifically states that use of its logos requires permission.
