Williamstown is known for its extensive trail network, but the vast majority of trails are managed only for hiking. Even though some land managers allow mountain biking, there have been no trails in the area that explicitly permit and welcome mountain bikes. None were built specifically with bikes in mind.
We see an opportunity to develop high-quality mountain bike trails that reflect the natural character of Williamstown while providing new recreation opportunities for the local and regional community.
We hope to connect existing trails and to explore opportunities for a purpose-built mountain bike trail network. The trails will incorporate our region’s considerable natural resources while emphasizing sustainability and minimizing environmental impact. A progressive, sustainable approach to trail design and construction will be prioritized throughout.
We believe that mountain bike trails will introduce cyclists of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to nature. By fostering a sense of stewardship for our landscape, we believe these trails can be a net benefit to individuals and the local environment.
A mountain bike-optimized trail network in Williamstown will:
Improve health and wellness opportunities for current residents
Incentivize active professionals to live in the area
Foster a sense of stewardship of the outdoors for people of all ages
Encourage children and young people to go outside and play!
In May of 2024 we signed an agreement with Williamstown & Williams College to make this vision a reality.
Purple Valley is a chapter of the New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA), a 501c3. You can also support our work by becoming a member or by making a tax deductible donation.
