Wheelerville Trails is a community-driven mountain bike trail development and stewardship program based in Caroga, New York, in the southern Adirondacks. The project was conceived to transform a Town-owned parcel into a high-quality, sustainable mountain bike trail network and has grown into one of the region's best-known gravity-oriented riding destinations.
The project originated with Jeremy Manning, a local mountain biker and former Caroga Town Board member, who recognized the potential of the Town's 118-acre property for mountain biking. The concept emerged around 2016, followed by a DEC-funded feasibility study and subsequent grant funding that allowed trail construction to begin. Manning continues to serve as Wheelerville's Trail Manager and has been responsible for much of the project's leadership, development and grant work.
Wheelerville's development has been a collaborative effort involving the Town of Caroga, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Adirondack Foothills Trails Alliance, professional trail builders and local volunteers. The Wheelerville website specifically credits hundreds of volunteer hours as an important part of the network's development, while AFTA has provided trail-building expertise, fundraising support and volunteer capacity.
The Adirondack Foothills Trails Alliance (AFTA) is an independent, all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and maintaining mountain bike trails in the greater Utica region and southern Adirondacks. AFTA works with Wheelerville rather than owning the Wheelerville property. Its role includes supporting construction, maintenance, fundraising and volunteer trail stewardship. AFTA lists Wheelerville's Forever Wild trail among the trails it supports/adopts.
