Overview
Elkins Area Shared Trails (EAST) is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to developing, stewarding, and promoting shared-use natural-surface trails in and around Elkins, West Virginia. EAST works to improve outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors through the creation of sustainable multi-use trails for mountain biking, hiking, trail running, walking, and other human-powered activities.
Originally formed as a collaborative of more than 30 local stakeholders, land managers, recreation groups, educational institutions, and government agencies, EAST has become a leading force behind trail development in the Elkins area and surrounding Monongahela National Forest region.
Mission
EAST's mission is to bring people together through the development, stewardship, and enjoyment of local trails while improving community health, quality of life, outdoor recreation access, and economic development opportunities throughout the Elkins region.
Service Area
EAST primarily serves the Elkins area in Randolph County, West Virginia, while also supporting trail planning and development projects extending into the nearby Monongahela National Forest.
Key Projects
- Elkins Area Trail Master Plan
Completed in 2023, the EAST Trail Master Plan outlines a community trail network connecting downtown Elkins to natural-surface trail experiences across four primary project areas:
- Davis Memorial Hospital Bike Park
- Glendale Park Skills Area
- Davis & Elkins College Trail System
- Darby Farm Trails
Together these projects envision more than 11 miles of community-accessible singletrack and recreational trail opportunities.
Monongahela National Forest Trail Initiative
EAST is working with the U.S. Forest Service, IMBA Trail Solutions, West Virginia University's Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative, and other partners on a proposed regional trail system connecting the Stuart Recreation Area and Bickle Knob area. Initial plans include approximately 15 miles of purpose-built shared-use trail with long-term concepts exceeding 100 miles of trail opportunities.
Trail Stewardship & Community Engagement
EAST organizes volunteer trail-building days, trail maintenance activities, educational workshops, public outreach events, and community trail celebrations. The organization promotes sustainable trail design and encourages broad community participation in trail stewardship.
