Overview
The Sawtooth Society is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and enhancing the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) in central Idaho. Founded in 1997, the organization serves as an advocate, steward, and partner for one of Idaho's most iconic public landscapes, encompassing approximately 756,000 acres of mountains, forests, rivers, wilderness, and recreation opportunities. The Society works closely with the U.S. Forest Service, local communities, recreation groups, landowners, and conservation organizations to protect the natural, scenic, historic, and recreational values of the SNRA.

The Sawtooth Society's mission is to preserve, protect, and enhance the Sawtooth National Recreation Area through conservation advocacy, stewardship, recreation enhancement projects, volunteer programs, education, and community partnerships.
Recreation & Trail Stewardship
The organization plays a significant role in maintaining and improving recreation infrastructure throughout the SNRA. Its trail stewardship program maintains more than 150 miles of priority trails and roadways annually through a combination of professional trail crews and volunteers. Projects include trail clearing, brushing, drainage improvements, tread repairs, habitat restoration, and public land stewardship initiatives. The Society has also supported major recreation projects such as the Stanley-to-Redfish Lake Trail and administers the SNRA Goat Plate Grant Program, which has funded hundreds of recreation enhancement projects throughout the recreation area.
Geographic Focus
The Society's work is focused entirely within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, including the communities of Stanley, Ketchum, Sun Valley, and surrounding public lands in Custer County and Blaine County. The area includes the Sawtooth and Boulder-White Clouds Wilderness areas, over 900 miles of trails, hundreds of alpine lakes, and numerous recreation destinations.
