Overview

Nestled on the slopes of Montagne Coupée in Saint-Jean-de-Matha, Québec, Abbaye Val Notre-Dame is a Cistercian monastery whose mission extends beyond spiritual life to caring for the natural environment entrusted to it. Since relocating from Oka in 2009, the monastic community has transformed its forested property into a welcoming destination where visitors can experience the peace, beauty, and biodiversity of the Lanaudière region through a network of hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country ski trails. The Abbey's philosophy is that outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship can coexist, creating opportunities for people of all backgrounds to connect with nature while respecting the tranquility of this unique landscape.

The mountain bike trails at La Forêt de l'Abbaye were developed with the blessing and support of the Abbey as a way of sharing its forests with the wider community. Designed to blend naturally into the terrain and minimize environmental impact, the trails reflect the Abbey's commitment to sustainable land management and providing meaningful outdoor experiences in an exceptional setting.

Stewardship & Trail Management

As the owner and steward of the property, Abbaye Val Notre-Dame provides the vision and long-term commitment that make the trail network possible. The Abbey welcomes visitors while ensuring that recreation remains compatible with the preservation of the forest, wildlife habitats, and the peaceful character of the monastery.

Day-to-day trail development, construction, maintenance, and ongoing improvements are carried out by Abbaye-Cyk, a dedicated volunteer group affiliated with the Abbey family. Working closely with the monastic community, Abbaye-Cyk plans new trails, builds sustainable singletrack, maintains existing routes, and helps ensure the network continues to evolve while respecting the Abbey's environmental and spiritual values.

Together, the Abbey and Abbaye-Cyk have created a trail system that demonstrates how a faith-based community and passionate volunteers can work together to provide exceptional outdoor recreation while protecting the natural landscape for future generations.

Facilities & Visitor Experience

Visitors to the Abbey can enjoy much more than the trail network. The site includes the Abbey boutique, picnic areas, washrooms, scenic viewpoints, and seasonal food services, making it an ideal destination for families, hikers, cyclists, and visitors seeking both recreation and quiet reflection. The trail network connects forests, open fields, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the surrounding Lanaudière countryside, creating an experience that is as scenic as it is enjoyable.

Mission

The Abbaye Val Notre-Dame demonstrates that outdoor recreation can complement the mission of a Christian community. By opening its lands to responsible public access and partnering with dedicated volunteers, the Abbey has created a place where visitors can experience nature, physical activity, and the peaceful atmosphere of the monastery in harmony. The result is a welcoming destination that reflects the values of hospitality, stewardship, community, and respect for creation while providing memorable trail experiences for all.
