The hills surrounding Mareeba are home to a rare breed of Mountain Goat known as the Oreamnos Mareeba or the Mareeba Mountain Goat.

This rare breed of mammal prefers the higher elevations provided by the hills in the Davies Creek and Tinaroo areas and can often be seen resting at the top of long steep climbs.

Although Mareeba Mountain Goats are social creatures, they have a competitive nature, often challenging each other for dominance with feats of daring and bravado.

Mareeba Mountain Goats are omnivorous and spend most of their time grazing on things such as fruit, nuts, liquid gels and lollies. In captivity, the Mareeba Mountain Goat’s diet can also include meat, pasta, vegetables, salads and beer.
