After the last two years of the original C4 (Cave Creek Cactus Classic) being cancelled, the locals are taking the race back. The “new” C4 (Captain Cosmo’s Crazy Challenge) is being hosted by the only person to be a part of C4 since its inception 14 years ago: Kaolin Cosmo Cummens, owner of Flat Tire Bike Shop in Cave Creek.
C4 is revived with a 2022 course redesign. This version includes the full Maricopa Trail Connection from Spur Cross to Cave Creek Park, and now features the Flume Trail exit out onto New River Rd for a spectator-friendly sprint finish. Trail conditions are extremely ROUGH this time around, hence the usage of “challenge” in the event name. This is not gonna be your PR year, that’s for sure. Record-setting monsoons coupled with scanty trail upkeep has led to much rockier conditions.
