Preone è conosciuto infine in tutto il mondo grazie alle ricchezze paleontologiche del suo territorio. Le ricerche hanno messo in luce grandi quantità di fossili vegetali, pesci, crostacei e sopratutto pterosauri (rettili volanti) di più di 200 milioni di anni - particolarmente noto è il Preondactylus Buffarinii.

Preone (Preon in Friulian language) is a 250-people village located in the Alps region of Carnia in Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy), laying on the side of the Tagliamento river at 460 meter of altitude.
It’s well known for it genuine and quiet atmosphere, great for family weekends and summer vacations. The village provides all essential services, more than 100 beds in wooden cottages and other housing for groups, congress and sports infrastructures, and a local production of goat cheeses. There are historical remains of the “Vallo Littorio” (fortifications from the IIWW), while the Preone Vally (more than 400 m above the village) welcomes the astonishing springs and falls of the Arzino river and the amazing beech tree forests.
Finally, Preone is well known globally for its paleontological heritage, including dozens of important fossils, especially of pterosaurs, more than 200 millions year old - particularly famous if the Preondactylus Buffarinii.
