        Socchieve è una delle borgate più antiche della Carnia. È, infatti, assai ricordata nel Medio Evo, a cominciare dall'anno Mille.

        Il suo nome di orgine latina, "sub clivo", trasformatosi nei secoli in "sot la cleva", si riferisce alla posizione sotto il colle.

        Sul colle, ai piedi del quale si trova la borgata di Socchieve, si ergeva il castello dei signori di Socchieve, a loro donato dal patriarca di Aquileia e dove oggi sorge l'antica pieve di S. Maria Annunziata (in località Castoja), già menzionata dalla metà del secolo XIII in poi, probabilmente sorta in seguito alla soppressione del vescovado di Zuglio e dove doveva esserci in tempi remoti una vedetta preromana o romana.

        Nel territorio di Socchieve sono numerose le architetture tipiche. Le chiese sono ricche di opere d'arte come ad esempio quella di San Martino (Monumento Nazionale) che nel presbiterio presenta un importante ciclo di affreschi del maggior pittore carnico del Rinascimento, Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo, risalente al 1493 e la sua ultima opera, una pala dipinta verso il 1510, raffigurante la Madonna con Bambino e i Santi Martino, Sebastiano e Rocco.

        A Socchieve si tiene la Rassegna Carnica: "Arte, Cultura, Lavoro", che si svolge da oltre trent'anni in estate - fra luglio ed agosto - ed è la più completa vetrina dell'artigianato locale. Vi sono esposti oggetti legati alle tradizionali lavorazioni della montagna, ma anche pezzi frutto di nuove tecniche. Si tratta di una vera mostra mercato a cui partecipano professionisti, semplici, ma abili amatori e hobbisti. Si possono ammirare creazioni di artigianato artistico e tradizionale, mobili, tessuti, abbigliamento, ceramica, orologeria, pelletteria, lavori di ricamo, legni intagliati.
