Description:
This is a trail work report for the SDMB volunteer weekend held June 26 and 27 2021. 3 Volunteers from the Tucson and Phoenix areas were in attendance. Brush work was completed over a quarter mile stretch starting at mile 2.1 if and mile 2.35 if hiking in from the lower Angle Orchard Trail head. The volunteers pushed/rode up Turkey Flat and rode down to the work area and shuttled back up to Turkey Flat Trail Head after the work day.
While Ladybug trail is still in a fairly primitive state, due to little use, it's in the best shape of the last several years. If you do want to check it out, think about going out with a friend or letting someone know you're out there if trying it solo. Bring lots of water/food/tools/tire repair etc. Bears seem to be quite active on the Veach Ridge section by the amount of scat observed. A bear was cited running away down slope to the south of Veach Ridge when riding in on work day 1. It was a smaller black bear and quite startled by the human presence. The trail can be quite loose in spots so use caution. There are also plenty of rocks to hook a pedal on. There are also a few highly technical rock sections that should be scouted before riding blind given the potential for a fall and or bike damage.
There will be sections you have to push your bike. The .5 mile up Turkey Flat is probably 60% ride-able and then 4 or so spots on Lady Bug down from the junction of Turkey Flat you'll need to dismount and push. Still, you still get a mostly rideable/mostly descending 4 miles down to Angle Orchard. We do not recommend riding down from upper Ladybug at this point. The lower section of that trail needs to be cleared of brush and dead fall. The switchbacks are also not bike friendly. All in all Ladybug down from Turkey Flat is an amazing CCC built Sky Island trail being revitalized for non motorized multi use.
If you want more miles we suggest adding on Round the Mountain, out and back, from lower Noon Creek Ridge intersection and Noon Creek Trail down to Noon Creek Picnic. Though, this should be attempted not in the middle of the day in the summer due to heat/exposure. If you're reading this consider joining us on the next work days this summer: July 17th and 18th, August 14th and 15th and Labor Day Weekend Sept 4, 5 and 6. Camping is being provided by the Forest Service and is located at 7500-9000ft for a nice escape from the heat.
