Description:
Rode Uptown towards Paper Route intending to do a cross-country ride over to the lakes area. A fun, well-groomed trail. At the intersection of the two trails, a MM trail minder asked for our park pass. Huh? Evidently, you have to pay $49/day if you want to ride MM trails regardless if you planned to go up the gondolas or not. It was pretty off-putting. The lesson was there are limited options in the Mammoth area for freely riding the open space trails, particularly if on a pedal-assist (ebike), many of which are analog/acoustic bike-only.  This is well known. The only part of the park you can ride for free without a pass is Downtown between the Village and Earthquake Fault. Otherwise you need a pedal pass or a full pass. People sometimes ride after closing at 6pm.

You will often see people riding UP Big Ring to access the park. There aren't any pass inspectors over on the Canyon or Eagle side, even during mid-day.
