This trail may have been a blue 20 years ago when it still had topsoil but now it's a solid black in my opinion. If you enjoy chunk, sharp rocks and trails marked with jagged rocks than this trail is for you.

This is a steep climb but well worth the work. The views at the top are way better than you’d imagine and, hey, you gotta go up to ride down!

Dry & Loose in places. Over inflated tires will probably washout pretty easily. Use caution.

Definitely take the fire road up so you won’t be gassed on your way down any of these surprisingly fast and technical trails. Your welcome!

I still don’t understand why people climb this. From my understanding you climb the fire road to go down all of these trails.

I am 99% sure this trail is not unsanctioned and I don't know why it's marked that way. I have passed someone from the land management organization parked near the entrance on the weekend (counting users?) more than once, and you'd think they'd say something if it were.

Don't know why this is marked unsanctioned, it has signage and the only things that are prohibited are motorized vehicles and e-bikes. As the above comment says, much harder than Water Tower, I usually end up hiking some of it, but also brings you out closer to different trails.

If you like to mob, I'd say this is the hardest and most fun trail to go down on the mountain. It's chunky, off camber, and steep in some sections. Get prepared for some serious arm pump

Not sure why this trail is getting such negative comments. Horned lizard is a great trail with a nice mix of flow, chunk and rocks. This is a fun an challenging trail solid blue trail and one of the better rides in North county.

Super fun and flowy going down, it sucks that people climb up it though since I climb up the fireroad and bomb down the trail and I always have to slam on my brakes to not hit a rider riding up. The fireroad is a quicker and easier climb so idk why people climb up switchbacks.

After doing this trail again after a little while, it’s terrible. It needs some serious work with rocks pointing straight up and out of the ground. It doesn’t matter if you’re on a full squish, you’ll still feel it.

The easiest and best climb at Ranch La Costa. Both Denning Road and Mule Deer are terrible. For decent climbers you can clean the whole thing. About 1/4 of the way up is the hardest part which is a road with a ton of potholes but again if you are a decent climber, you can get through it. Then it turns into wider and technical single track, but nothing that goes straight up.

If you park where this trail ends and your in a rush then you should take this trail, however it isn’t very fun. If your not in a hurry tho then just head down the rest of switchbacks for a fun, chunky dh.

If you are a world class XC racer then you MIGHT be able to clear this thing. So rocky and rutted at the start. If you wanted to go down this (which you could and it might be fun) just be ready for a lot of small rock rolls and sudden drops. If it was a downhill trail it would be a single black.

My personal favorite trail on the hill. Not a uphill trail, you will regret it. I would actually say the first half is a black while after the rock roll it becomes more of a blue.

Rutted out. Recent rain exposed more rocks. Still a lot of fun!

I agree this trail is garbage. Most of the easy lines have been blocked off. A large portion of the trail is delineated by sharp rocks. Why the trail builders lined the trail with something that can seriously hurt a rider is beyond me.
