A great day hike to the summit of Mt. Stern. Mt. Stern is possibly the toughest of the bronze peaks in the Passport To the Peaks program. Information for this program can be obtained from the Tourist Info in Grande Cache. Once above the treeline there are beautiful view of the Smokey River valley and the peaks of the Wilmore Wilderness Park. Wildflower peak season is generally mid July. This is a popular hike so you will not be alone on the summer weekends.. The trail leading to Lightning Ridge and Volcano Mountain splits off to the west when you reach the pass between the 2 mountains. The last pitch before the summit is an exposed scramble but is very short.
If you wanted to ride this trail it will require a lot of pushing or carrying up and even a few spots on the way down. There are a couple of sections of the trail that are deeply eroded making pedal strikes inevitable. This however would be an epic ride down. If you do ride it, ride in control as the trail is very heavily used by hikers throughout the summer months.
There is a pull-out at the south end of the gravel pit on the Sulphur Gates Road the trail starts across the the road from the parking spot.
This trail is unsanctioned.
