The Red Hills Recreation Management Area offers approximately 50 miles of non-motorized, single-track multi-use trails of varying difficulty. These trails are open to runners, hikers, equestrians, dogs, and cyclists (including E-Bikes). The maintenance of these trails is primarily undertaken by the volunteer group known as RHATS (Red Hills Alliance & Trail Stewards). RHATS is responsible for most of the trail upkeep, including managing trail sustainability, de-brushing, drainage corrections, grade reversal work, re-routing, and more. Due to the intense heat and dry periods of the Sierra Nevada foothill summers, most trail maintenance activities occur between November and April.
In addition to standard trail maintenance, RHATS works to identify, enhance, and incorporate natural features into existing trails and add elements that enhance the user experience where possible. RHATS volunteers dedicate hundreds of hours annually to ensure the trails remain accessible and enjoyable for all users.
RHATS collaborates with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to gain formal approval of the "sustainable" trails currently existing at Red Hills, discourage the use of non-sustainable trails, and prevent the establishment of unauthorized trails within the Red Hills region.
Users are reminded to use the trails responsibly and to:
- Be aware of your skill level and utilize the trails accordingly.
- Be respectful of all trail users, including equestrians, cyclists, hikers, and trail runners.
- Refrain from entering or trespassing on private property surrounding Red Hills.
- Avoid disturbing wildlife or plant life.
- Do not create new trails or alter existing ones.
- Avoid using the trails immediately after rainfall to prevent damage.
