Pisgah National Forest โ Grandfather Ranger District
The Grandfather Ranger District is a management district of the Pisgah National Forest, administered by the U.S. Forest Service from its district office in Nebo, North Carolina. The District encompasses a large portion of the southern and central Blue Ridge Mountains, extending from the McDowell/Buncombe County area northward toward the Blue Ridge Parkway and the U.S. 321 corridor near Lenoir and Blowing Rock. It includes a diverse network of public lands, trails, Forest Service roads, waterways, recreation sites, and protected areas.
For mountain biking, the District is particularly significant because it contains multiple distinct Trailforks Ride Areas, including Wilson Creek, Boone Fork, Woods Mountain, and Old Fort, as well as numerous individual trail systems and connecting Forest Service roads. These areas provide a wide range of riding opportunities, from established singletrack networks to long, remote backcountry routes. The Forest Service maintains and manages the underlying trail system and publishes official trail information and management data.
