PAS was born out of the need for the local mountain bikers to have a voice. At the time we were losing several miles of highly used trails in the Bent Creek Experimental Forest. These trails were permanently being turned into gravel roads and we were a bunch of individuals complaining about it. The Forest Service just didn’t seem to be aware of how important Bent Creek was as a recreational resource for mountain biking. Our other local bike club, the Blue Ridge Bike Club (BRBC) did have some input and helped keep the disaster from being more extensive. But the membership of the BRBC is mostly made up of road bikers and the perception in the mountain bike community was to form a separate organization specifically for mountain bikers.
