The Coningham Mountain Bike Club (CMBC) formed to help formalise the cross country mountain bike trail network that exists in the Coningham Nature Recreation Area. There are currently a network of over 8 km of existing high quality, low visual impact informal trails that have developed in a somewhat ad-hoc fashion over the past decade. We created the club to bring together the riders using those trails in an effort to formalize the current network, and to ensure that no further trails appear without careful planning and design. The area is ideal for cross-country style mountain biking and those of us that use the trails believe they are world class, and that the network can be improved and maintained in accordance with international standards. At this stage the existing trails are well designed with minimal (if any) earthworks and are not causing erosion or damaging vegetation (other than grasses such as saggs and tussockgrass). The trail lines were routed along existing animal tracks expressly to ensure that no living trees or shrubs required removal (in the clubs knowledge). We hope to build on the network and we are currently in negotiations with The Tas Parks Service to formalise the network.
