Mission/Purpose
Garrett County Trails, Inc, operating as Garrett Trails, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit trail organization dedicated to developing, connecting and promoting a high-quality network of sustainable trails throughout Garrett County, Maryland. The organization works with public agencies, municipalities, landowners, businesses, community organizations and volunteers to develop and improve trails for hiking, mountain biking and other forms of outdoor recreation. Garrett Trails also promotes trails as an important resource for community connectivity, tourism, economic development and quality of life.
Operating Area
Garrett Trails operates throughout Garrett County in western Maryland, working to connect the county's communities, public lands and existing trail systems. Its signature initiative is the Eastern Continental Divide Loop (ECDL), envisioned as an approximately 150-mile multi-use trail network connecting communities and trail systems throughout Garrett County and ultimately connecting with the Great Allegheny Passage in Pennsylvania.
Other Salient Features
Garrett Trails works in partnership with Garrett County Government, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Department of Transportation, local municipalities, landowners, businesses, nonprofit organizations and trail organizations including IMBA and Appalachian Dirt. Its work includes trail planning, development, sustainable trail construction, maintenance, advocacy, fundraising, volunteer coordination and development of connections between existing trail systems.
Trail areas and projects with which Garrett Trails has been involved include Fork Run Recreation Area, Margraff Plantation, Meadow Mountain and the Eastern Continental Divide Loop, Wisp Mountain and Wisp Resort, the Mosser Road Heritage Trail, and trail connections involving Deep Creek Lake, Savage River State Forest, Herrington Manor, Swallow Falls and surrounding communities.
Garrett Trails does not serve as the land manager for all of these areas. Many trails are located on property managed by Garrett County, Maryland DNR or other landowners. Garrett Trails' role varies by project and may include development, construction, maintenance, planning, advocacy, fundraising, volunteer coordination and partnership development.
Garrett Trails is governed by a Board of Directors and supported by an executive director, staff and volunteers. Josh Spiker serves as Executive Director, providing organizational leadership and overseeing trail development, partnerships and advocacy. The organization serves as a countywide trail-development and stewardship organization, bringing together public agencies, communities, landowners and volunteers to build and maintain a connected trail network.
A major focus of Garrett Trails is the Eastern Continental Divide Loop, which is intended to connect Garrett County's individual trail systems and communities into a unified regional network. The organization also supports trail accessibility and community use of the trail network, including an all-terrain wheelchair program operated in partnership with the Deep Creek Lions Club.
