hike This segment of the Appalachian Trail is also referred to as Ravens Rock, likely because one often sees ravens at the peak of the trail. However, the name roller coaster is just as apt. The trail is continuous climbs, descents and switchbacks over, often, very rocky surface and steep inclines and descents. It’s a pretty segment and an excellent workout for those climbing muscles and knees! I normally hike it several times a year. Because of all the rain, the trail was wet over the weekend, though not terribly muddy.

On account of the rocks, it’s best to wear either hiking shoes or boots, or trail running shoes that have a stiff shank to prevent sharp stones from hurting one’s feet. Bring at least 16 ounces of water and, in warmer weather, more. The trail is commonly hiked, though I’ve never found it crowded. Small children will likely find the trail challenging or very challenging. I haven’t seen much wildlife along the trail, however, one couple we spoke with saw a black bear that gave them a fright (the bear probably didn’t want to see them, either).

Enjoy!
