Description:
I always run this loop clockwise which is different than the trail profile. The initial climb up Hawksnest is a beast, but if you run the loop clockwise, the downhill that starts the loop is worth it. There are a couple of rocky sections to watch out for on the descent, but for the most part, you can open it up and let it rip. There's a good bit of climbing on the North and East sides of the loop which isn't technical, but can be slower slogs if your legs aren't feeling it. The trail ends with another nice descent down to Hawksnest. If there's no hikers around, you can carry some speed into Hawksnest and cruise down to the parking lot. The trail is usually busy though. Spring is a great time to do this trail because of all the wildflowers.
