This ride can start in the lower parking lot or the one about a half mile (or less) up schultz pass rd.
I saw people ride it in both directions, but I would recommend the clockwise direction so as not to be going against riders blasting down Schultz Creek trail.
I would say experienced beginners could ride it, but not a beginner just learning to ride a bike.
Half of it is uphill, so you do need some cardio, and some of schultz creek trail is on the side of a hill, so you need to be comfortable with that.
I rode this loop 8/23/20 and I thought it was a fun ride.
Detailed Description
Schultz Pass Loop is a 12 mile moderately popular intermediate route located near Flagstaff Arizona. This mountain bike only route can be used both directions and has a moderate overall physical rating. This route includes 15 trails. This route climbs 1,043 ft with a max elevation of 8,109 ft then descends -1,043 ft.

This is a fantastic trail. I did get lost for a minute on the AZT section and ended up following the hotshots trail to to pipeline before realizing that I was in the wrong place. I don’t recommend going up hotshots btw. Anyway, once I got back on track, it’s a beautiful, if not strenuous course though the forest. I was considering quitting and just turning around to ride the 7 mile climb backwards, but my stubbornness prevailed and I fortunately arrived the junction of Schultz creek trail before my heart went into complete arrest. Heading down the Schultz Creek trail for the final 4 mile descent to the parking lot was a blast. It’s basically nonstop downhill with some smooth flowy berms, and some teeth-chattering rocky sections. I was lucky to not encounter a single hiker, because I was flying down the trail and likely would have had to bail into a boulder or off a ledge to avoid accidental manslaughter, or at least a lawsuit for failure to yield. Coming to Flagstaff from Sedona, this trail was exactly the thrill I was hoping for to contrast the slow-going endless tech and absence of flow that abounds in the desert below.

Would suggest this loop be ridden in opposite direction. Ride up Schultz creek and down AZT/Moto.

There some reroutes of the AZT and Schultz Creek that this route does not reflect. You can still get around this loop with track, there will just be a few spots of head scratching if you are just following the screen.
