From the main parking area, the Violet trail follows the river and over a blown-out dam before climbing to the quarry area on a very rocky section. After curving around the head, the the trail levels out and one can see some of the extensive 2018 tornado damage that closed the park for a year.
Joining the Red Circle Trail, the hike climbs up into a rugged boulder spill notch along a wet land and continues up to the top of the ridge and crosses the blue-blazed Quinipiac Trail.
The Green Trail follows an inner mountain valley with some impressive crags on both sides of the trail. The trail climbs out of the valley to an outstanding view of New Haven and the Giant's Chin at the junction of the White Trail.
The White Trail is a rugged and steep trail, but a number of steps, probably built by the CCC, help with the footing in some of the steepest sections. The Tower Path crossing offers an opportunity to bail out ad take the easy gravel road down to the main parking area.
