The Woodpecker Loop is a great gravel ride in Big Shoals State Park, half on a paved bike trail, then back on an unpaved double track forest road.

Optionally the route can include the Long Branch Loop, but that will be a challenge on a gravel bike. It includes a few technical spots, and often wet sections, that could require dismounts. At the end of the Woodpecker Trail, continue on the paved road to one end of the Long Branch trail for an additional 2 miles of challenge before returning on Road 1, which has three seasonal stream crossings.

There are still trees blocking the trail, and the pallet bridge is gone, and it needs mowing, but work to restore the trail continues. reporter
