If you're climbing out from Buck Gulley, there is a very difficult initial climb out which turns into a fire road about 100 meters up the trail. From there the climb is relatively tame, turning into a dirt road with some switchbacks. If you're descending from San Joaquin, it is a fun curvy dirt road with some loose and rocky sections.
