The DWP is a former railroad grade ("Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway") that has long-since been re-purposed as a trail. It's a wide (15') gravel path traversing the contour lines above western Duluth and around Ely's Peak. The grade goes through a few sections that feel like small narrow canyons, due to the rock-blasting required to level the RR grade, as well as a tunnel through the formidable Ely's Peak.

Railroad bridges were restored and re-decked by the City of Duluth between 2018 and 2020.

The elevation profiel shows a few peaks. These are errors. As a former railroad grade, the trail is nearly flat.
